Colin Cowherd Praises Patriots for Executing an 'Anti-Bill Belichick' Draft

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd praise the New England Patriots for just executing the ‘anti-Bill Belichick’ draft last weekend at the 2024 NFL Draft.

Check out the segment above as Colin tips his hat to new Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo for devising a plan to actually fortify the weapons around new franchise quarterback Drake Maye, and not pull what Belichick did with former first-round QB Mac Jones, who was playing with arguably the worst group of skill position players in the league.

Colin Cowherd: “Bill Belichick, I know everybody loves him, was allergic to offense. He's got great stories, that's awesome. He's the best defensive coach ever, that's also great. He doesn't know what he's doing offensively with personnel. The last eight drafts will tell you this.
Jerod Mayo, he's the new coach, 7 of their first 8 picks – OFFENSE. The first five picks – OFFENSIVE. It's the anti-Belichick draft. Last year Bill Belichick, even with the slowest and least-dynamic receiving corps and tight end corps in the league, started the draft with a corner, a defensive tackle, and a linebacker. He later drafted multiple guards and a kicker. They did nothing to help Mac Jones. Jerod Mayo comes in: offense, offense, offense, offense.
I don't know how good Drake Maye is going to be but they're setting him up to succeed. They didn’t do anything to help Mac Jones. They overpaid for possession receivers, and overpaid for mediocre tight ends. They brought in Zeke, who was washed, at running back. They did nothing to help Mac Jones. They made the offensive coordinator Matt Patricia. I don't think Mac Jones was ever going to be Patrick Mahomes but you got to help these young guys out. Whether or not Drake Maye makes it I don't know, but this draft was built to help the young guy. Speed, receivers, linemen -- built to help the young guy.
Belichick let Jakobi Meyers go, who was universally thought of as their most talented receiver and their hardest working. They let Joe Thuney go, the best interior offensive lineman New England has had in a decade. I don't know if Jerod Mayo is going to make it, I don't know if Drake Maye is going to make it, but they're giving the kid a shot.
Belichick did nothing to help Mac Jones. Probably the only thing he did that I liked was he moved off Cam Newton. There’s almost no chance for a ‘B’ prospect to flourish when you don't give them help.
I did like this draft. It’s the anti-Belichick draft. It was receivers, skill people, offense... I mean, last year they go corner, linebacker, defensive tackle, kicker, and two guards, when all they had is possession receivers. You weren’t giving Mac Jones a fighting chance.”
